Jade is usually thought of as a green stone. Few realize that this precious gemstone can actually occur in many other colors. True jade can be one of two different minerals, nephrite and jadeite. Nephrite Nephrite is the softer of the two jades. And yet Nephrite is still harder than steel and can not be scratched by it. Jadeite Jadeite on the other hand is an even harder version of jade. It is much rarer and comes from Myanmar. Jadeite has also been discovered in Guatemala and also is found in small amounts in other parts of the world. Jadeite can occur in the many different colors of jade ; red, green, blue, white, black and lavender to mention a few. As jadeite is the harder of the two stones, Jadeite is also harder than steel which means that it can not be scratched by it. Jade color can vary in its hues of ranging from ; green, amazing shades of reds, oranges and yellows, the extremely rare violets, white and black, to fascinating shades of blue. What gives jade its color? Different amounts and types of trace elements that can change the color of jade. The colors of jade can vary depending on the amount of iron oxide and magnesium. Magnesium rich jade (which has less iron oxide) is lighter in color. These can be white, light green and lavender. Red nephrite jade has a large amount of iron oxide.
